Bed bugs don’t care how nice the hotel was — they travel in luggage, on clothing, and in the seams of bags, regardless of star rating. The single best moment to catch a hitchhiking bed bug is right when you get home, before anything’s been unpacked into your bedroom.

Why This Moment Matters More Than Any Other

Once bed bugs make it out of your luggage and into a bedroom, they can spread to the bed frame, skirting boards, and nearby furniture within days. Catching them while they’re still contained to a suitcase is dramatically easier and cheaper to deal with than treating an established bedroom infestation.

The 10-Minute Post-Trip Checklist

Before you bring luggage into the bedroom:

1. Unpack in a hard-surfaced room if possible (bathroom, hallway) rather than directly onto carpet or the bed
2. Inspect luggage seams, zippers, and the inside lining with a torch — bed bugs are visible to the naked eye but hide in tight seams
3. Check any items that were in direct contact with hotel furniture — book bags, laptop cases, shoes left on the floor

Washing and drying:

4. Wash all clothing — worn or not — on the hottest setting the fabric allows
5. Tumble dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes; heat is what actually kills bed bugs and eggs, not the washing itself
6. Items that can’t be washed (some outerwear, certain fabrics) can be tumble dried on high alone, or sealed in a bag for two weeks as an alternative

The suitcase itself:

7. Vacuum the inside and outside of the suitcase thoroughly, especially seams and wheels
8. Store luggage somewhere other than the bedroom where possible — a garage, hallway cupboard, or loft — rather than under the bed

Signs to Watch For Over the Following Two Weeks

Even a thorough check can miss something small, so keep an eye out for:

• Small itchy bites appearing in a line or cluster, especially on skin exposed while sleeping
• Rust-coloured spots on sheets or mattress seams
• Live bed bugs along mattress piping when checked with a torch

What To Do If You Spot Something
