Mice are one of the most common pest problems in London, particularly in Victorian and Edwardian terraces, converted flats, and any property backing onto gardens or shared drains. A mouse can squeeze through a gap the width of a pencil, which is why sealing entry points is just as important as the initial treatment - without it, new mice simply move in behind the ones you’ve cleared.
Signs of a mice infestation

- Small, dark droppings (roughly rice-grain sized) near food storage, along skirting boards, or inside cupboards
- Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls, ceilings, or under floorboards - usually most noticeable at night
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, skirting boards, or wiring
- A stale, ammonia-like smell in enclosed spaces such as cupboards or lofts
- Greasy smear marks along regular routes near walls, where mice repeatedly brush against the same surface
Mice Control Treatment vs proofing - what’s the difference?

Treatment
Treatment reduces the current mouse activity inside your property, using professional-use bait placed in the areas mice are actually using, typically over two visits within a few weeks to a few months, allowing us to check progress and adjust as needed.
Proofing
Proofing is the long-term fix: systematically sealing the gaps mice are using to get in - around pipework, under kitchen units, through air bricks, and around service penetrations. Treatment without proofing often means the problem returns, since it doesn’t change how mice are getting in.
For most London properties, especially flats and terraces with shared walls, we’d recommend treatment first, followed by proofing once activity has calmed down and access points are clear.
Our Mice Control Process
- Inspection - checking likely entry points and activity signs throughout the property, including kitchen units, boiler cupboards, and loft spaces.
- Professional-use bait placement - positioned precisely in active areas, well out of reach of children and pets.
- Follow-up visit - to check and replenish bait and assess whether activity has reduced.
- Proofing (where needed) - sealing identified entry points around kitchen units, pipework, air bricks, and skirting gaps.
What does mice control cost in London?
Mice treatment is £190 for a flat and £240 for a house. Proofing the small holes they use to get in is £180 for up to an hour, and bigger proofing jobs are quoted once we have seen the gaps.
Treatment and proofing are always listed separately on your quote, so you know exactly what you are paying for. If the mice come back within 60 days and the proofing we recommended was done, we return free.
Common in These London Areas
Mice are a frequent call-out across North West London (period terraces), North East London (dense converted housing), and South East London (riverside flats). Check your area page for local detail, or contact us directly.

What happens on the visit
- We look for droppings, smear marks and nibbled packets to map where the mice are running.
- We check the gaps they use: behind kitchen units, around pipes and cables, under floorboards and at the back of the boiler cupboard.
- Professional bait goes in tamper-resistant boxes, placed out of reach of children and pets.
- Follow-up visits check what has been taken and adjust the placement.
- We list every entry point, so you can decide on proofing with the full picture.
How to get ready
- Put open food, pet food and bird seed into sealed containers.
- Empty the cupboard under the sink and the one next to the cooker.
- Pull the kickboards off the kitchen units if they come away easily.
- Leave any droppings where they are until we have seen them. They show us the routes.

How long does it take to get rid of mice?
Most infestations show a clear reduction in activity within the first one to two weeks of treatment, with full resolution typically confirmed over two to three visits.
Will mice come back after treatment?
If entry points aren't sealed, yes - this is the single most common reason mice problems recur. Proofing is what actually stops repeat infestations, not just the initial bait treatment.
Are mice dangerous?
Mice droppings and urine can spread bacteria including salmonella, and their gnawing can damage wiring and insulation, which is a fire risk as well as a costly repair. They breed quickly, so a small problem can become a larger one within weeks.
Is mouse bait safe with children and pets in the house?
Yes - professional bait is placed in tamper-resistant stations or locations inaccessible to children and pets, and we'll talk you through exactly where everything is placed.
How can I tell mice apart from rats?
Mice droppings are smaller (roughly rice-grain sized) with pointed ends, while rat droppings are noticeably larger. Mice also tend to be more active in kitchens and cupboards, while rats are more commonly linked to gardens, drains, and larger structural gaps.
Why do I have mice even though my home is clean?
Mice are drawn to warmth and shelter as much as food, and can enter through gaps as small as a pencil width - a spotless home can still attract mice if entry points around pipework or air bricks are unsealed.
Can mice cause structural damage?
Yes - persistent gnawing can damage wiring (a fire risk), insulation, and skirting boards over time, which is another reason to treat and proof early rather than waiting.
Do I need proofing if I only saw one mouse?
A single sighting can sometimes be an isolated visitor, but mice breed quickly, so it's worth booking an inspection to confirm whether it's an isolated incident or the start of an established infestation.
